Issue of Ossetians’ Education PDF Print E-mail

Resume

Georgians have paid great attention to education of Ossetians. According to historical sources even Georgian kings took care of Ossetians’ education.

Attention was focused on this issue in the later period as well, although the events, having taken place in 90s told negatively on their education. Due to massive migration of the Ossetians the number of Ossetian pupils and teachers substantially decreased (There are very few teachers of Ossetian language at the given moment and there will be no teacher at all in the nearest future). Consequently there are few schools where Ossetian is language is delivered. (It is a very positive factor that the Ministry of Education of Georgia opened an Ossetian Sunday school in 2006).

It should be pointed out that the Ossetian language text-books are quite outdated. (They were published eighteen, nineteen and even more years ago). Besides the majority of Ossetian pupils (and teachers as well) are left without the Ossetian language text-book. (There are no Georgian-Ossetian and Ossetian-Georgian dictionaries, phrasebook).

It should be taken into consideration that Georgian language has become a second native language for Ossetian children. Appropriately “Tavtavi”-type text-book of Georgian language (in difference with other non-Georgian schools) would fail to deepen their knowledge.
